It’s time to take a look at another invasive pest insect destroying plants throughout the Sacramento area. The handsome Japanese Beetle is the second in our series of invasive pests following our previous coverage of the Spotted Wing Drosophila which has been terrorizing cherry farmers all around Northern California. Similarly the Japanese Beetle is a major pain for fruit farmers regionally as it loves to eat the leaves of trees and shrubs all the way to the stems causing massive damage to the plants it feasts on.

Japanese beetles damage hundreds of different plants, but some of its favorites are roses, grapes, cherries, peaches, plums, apples, raspberries, corn and zinnias. This obviously makes the Japanese Beetle an uninvited guest and a real menace to gardeners as well as farmers alike. Even worse the Japanese Beetle larva do severe damage to lawns as the grubs tear away at grass leaving bald patches as they eat away at the roots.

Adult beetles are broadly oval and nearly 1/2 inches long. Their bright metallic green body is easily recognizable with a copper tipped abdomen and fluffy tufts of white hairs protruding just behind the wings. Their larva however are less immediately distinguishable and resemble many other beetle larva can be found crawling about in the dirt.

The Japanese beetle is originally from Japan, and was first found in the U.S. in 1916 in New Jersey. It is not a serious pest in Japan where there are relatively few large grassy areas favorable for its reproduction, and the action of predators, parasites, and pathogens keep the beetle numbers low. In the U.S. however, a favorable climate, large areas of permanent turf for reproduction, and ineffectual natural enemies favor increased population densities. Because of this It is considered a serious pest in the U.S. and great measures have been taken to try and control is growing population.
